poems

Well in the beginning of this week when he gave us the group quiz to do, I freaked out because I of course didn't use common sense and read the story only the pages that were on the syllabus. So when I got back home I read the story I thought it was really interesting. In the list of questions on the quiz I enjoyed answering the question about if it were a good idea that he ran away? I thought if he went to the right place I think it would be a good idea for him for example the military especially since he has a drive for guns.

And today in class when we discussed the poems we read I thought it was interesting to hear the different view points of how people interpreted the poems especially the Phillis poem, how someone saw it was being sarcastic.

But my favorite poems were still I rise, Madam to her Madam, and I too sing America. They all sort of were similar that spoke about class and racial issues.

beautiful day

Yesterday was just beautiful it was great getting out of class a little early. When I passed in my midterm I had a rush of clamnest come over my body, because now its off my hands. I felt even more comfortable after we started talk about how everybody had problems with the midterm and that he is going to keep those thoughts in his mind while grading. When we started talkin about the Fredrick Douglas reading everyone had really good points about how he wrote the story for example how he didn't give details on how he escaped so that other slaves could escape with out being caught. But as i mentionned before the one thing I thought that was interesting was when the slaves would rank the slave masters as being mean and least mean because in my eyes they are all cruel.
I am almost done ready the Passing which is a really good book I can't wait to be done with it to find out if Irene and Clarie get back in touch or if Irene says something outstanding to her, or if Clarie gives her a reason as to why she is hiding who she is.

Ok so I keep forgetting to blog, so this week I am going to try and blog about three times so that I hopefully catch up. But anyways first I want to say I was so excited that class was canceled last Thursday because that gave me more time to work on the Midterm which if I may say was harder than I thought it was going to be. I also read that Fredrick Douglas story it was very interesting but somewhat confused me when he had to keep changing owners. I also thought it was interesting how in the beginning he only saw the torment of the slaves and later on in his life he experienced it himself.
The craziest thing I noticed in this reading was how they ranked the people who watched out for the slaves as being mean to least mean. Because in our mind today they are all equally mean because they are all there for the same reasons. But through all his struggles, in the end it turned out to be a good story of his life.

Okonkwo What?

Well after I got past all the crazy similar names I understood the story. The quiz he gave us on Thursday allowed me to answer things that were going through my mind the entire time such as why is the story named things fall apart my answer to this was something along the lines of because everything in the story fell apart even from the beginning from his father, Okonkwo was extremely disappointed in his father and tried never to become him. Other things that fell apart are his family, his eldest son ran off to be with the Christians, and in the very end it seemed like Okonkwo was just so fed up with everything falling apart that he fell apart. Another question I really was interested in was who was the other. Of course most of us put Okonkwo, but I also put his eldest son and his father, because just like his father Nywoe was a lazy man and he eventually left and became a Christian. Therefore this was an interesting reading and gave a greater insight of the civilizations of that time than I had ever read of heard of before.

hmmmmm?

To start I want to talk about the 5 readings we did the other day. They were all very different but I had two favorites the Ghost, and Preparation. They both were different from our culture today, for example a lot of people today may not be apt to searching for a ghost they saw in the middle of the night, and I haven't heard of anyone Prepare there best friends body for burial unless they worked at the funeral home. Although they are different I think there might be some correlation between the two. It seemed as though they were both trying to find a connection with the dead, by the man searching for the young deceased girl's family, and the woman preparing her best friend and questioning there friendship. They were searching for some answer, and in there attempt to find answers they were slapped in the face with reality.
But the best part about both of these stories were there endings, the man being swallowed, and the woman finding out that her best friend had breast cancer.

Madman

I would like to start off by saying that it was great not having class on Tuesday the weather was beautiful. Anyways when reading this story I got the fact that the younger brother felt like everyone was out to get him and eat him. But at the same time I kept thinking to myself I know this story has to have some abstract type of meaning behind it, but I couldn't put my finger on it. That was until we had class, hearing every ones ideas about how this story about cannibalism relates to today's society. It also helped when he gave examples of how this type of story has been around for ever, how society trys to have people conform, and if they don't conform society will devour them and make them a part of themselves. Know wonder he is a Madman.

Poor Othello

This week went alot easier after I figured out how to read Shakespear. But I know that we were saying that Othello was more of the outsider but I really think that there might be two outsiders in this story, Iago and Othello. I understand how we see Othello as the ousider but I see Iago as an outsider too, he is out to get everyone else and nobody else is that evil so there for I believe he in a way is more of an outsider than Othello. Shakespears plays are always intersting but I think this one was one of the most interesting.
